Pula Forum

The Forum was and still is the main square in ancient and today town of Pula. It was the central meeting point of ancient city, a space for public gatherings, political acts, religious practices, and the core of city life. The Forum was the most important public space, and in architectural, artistic and sculptural way, it was the very central part of the town. The ancient square was a flat squared space (in Pula it was an area of 39×82 meters), surrounded by the porch from three sides, and the temple, the most important part, on the fourth.

The temple was the place of worshiping the Roman cult of the holy Trinity of Capitolinum (Jupiter, Juno and Minerva). The porch was protecting the people from the rain and the sun, and it could be used for walking, but also as an entrance to all the public and commerce places, which were located in the Forum. Decisions were made here, ambassadors from the Ancient city of Rome were hosted in this place, and it was the mirror of the public life of the town. Pula Forum was also its main square through the Middle Ages, in the time of the free medieval community, when in the place of pagan temple, local government built a communal palace. In Venetian time, Venetian dux, providur, ruled in the palace which in time had a new inner and outer appearance, and used it to govern the town and whole southern Istria.

The Forum has kept his public role to the present time, and historic communal palace is still today the seating place of the city’s and county’s authorities. Today, influences from different architectural and historical styles are still visible: from ancient, medieval, modern to the present style.
