Pula: 3000 years old city, which is, like ancient Rome, built on the seven hills

Like Rome, Pula was also built on the seven hills which in local dialect usually have the prefix „Monte“, which can be translated as the hill: Monte Zaro, Monte Paradiso, Monte Giro, Monte Grande, Kaštel, Monte Serpente and Kaštanjer.

During the course of time, it was characteristic, especially in the Austrian period, to build military fortifications on each of the hill, which were used in town’s defense system. It is assumed the tribe Histri founded the city on the location of former hill fort, located on Kaštel hill in the very center of Pula. Today, there is still a garrison built in the time of Venice Republic, which is now turned into a Historical museum of Istria, which has over 75000 objects of cultural, historical, political, military and ethnographic character, in over 15 collections.

There is evidence that the whole city is built on a network of tunnels which were built in the Austrian period, as a part of the defense system of the town. Supposedly, there are tunnels underneath every hill that are mutually connected.
