Pula

Pula has a very long tradition of tourism. Its popularity harks back to the times of the Roman Empire. Early Romans realized the strategic importance of the surrounding area of Pula, which is placed in a beautiful bay and is very well protected from possible storms. There are a lot of fish in the sea, along with vineyards, olives and several sunny days in the year. It has proved to be a haven for people who want a relaxing holiday. The interesting fact is that Pula is almost halfway from the North Pole to the Equator. This ensures a very agreeable climate in the area. Pula lies on seven hills. Due to that, Pula is often called as Little Rome. The names of these hills are Monte Zaro, Monte Serpente, Monte Ghiro, Monte Magno, Monte Paradiso, Monte Rizzi and Monte Vidal.

In the Middle Ages, after the fall of the Roman Empire, Pula became the main port of the Byzantine Navy and was subsequently replaced by many rulers of Pula from the Frankish Kingdom, the Venetian Republic and even on account of some mutual conflicts. After that period, Pula had its tryst with Napoleon’s rule. It was followed by its destined experiences with Habsburg and the Fascist Authority, and after the World War 2, it became a part of Yugoslavia. An accelerated economic development took place after this time. The backbone of this improved economy lay in activities such as tourism, fishing and shipbuilding. Subsequently, with the dissolution of Yugoslavia, Pula and Istria became a part of the Republic of Croatia.
